How to create a bootable USB using cmd

There are a couple of ways for making a USB drive bootable. Bootable Flash Drives can be used either for installing operating systems or can be used as a diagnostic tool. To create one, you can use the command-line utility which comes pre-installed on Windows or do it by using Softwares such as Rufus, PowerISO or Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. So this is a small guide to create bootable USB using cmd.

Method 1. Using diskpart (Command Prompt):-

This method first makes the drive bootable. After that, you can copy the contents of operating system media to make it a portable installation drive.It works only in Windows Vista, 7, and 8.

Here are the steps regarding the same:

Step 1: Open Command Prompt with Administrator rights.Do this by right clicking on cmd program and click on Run as Administrator.

 

Step 2: Type “diskpart” to enter in Disk Management utility.

Step 3: Type “list disk” to display all the drives connected to your computer.Locate your USB drive and note the corresponding number this step erases all the data on the selected disk permanently.

Step 4: Now type the following command one by one by pressing Enter after typing each command.

Clean

Create partition primary

Select partition 1

Active

Format fs=ntfs quick

Exit

Step 5: Now, you are done with making your USB drive bootable. If you are creating a windows installation media, then copy the contents of operating system files and paste it in your USB drive and that’s it.
